They had the best selection of fittings I have ever seen. They were even able to make a hose from a fitting the DID NOT HAVE. Yes, that’s right! Instead of having to wait 2-3 days for dealer to ship a hose with proprietary fittings, they were able to remove the special fitting from my damaged hose and attach it to a new hose with a crimp sleeve. WORK PERFECTLY! I have damaged these hoses many times over the last decade and NO hydraulic shop could manage to get the end or reuse my end, I was always forced to go back to the dealer and wait. Anyone with a Quickie/ALO loader ~2008 or newer with the push-in style fitting that is secured with a plastic horseshoe clip has probably shared this frustration. NOT ANYMORE!!

Buffalo Southern Railroad praises The PowerHouse™ DWS-120 Idle Reduction System

Buffalo, NY – The “Snowvember” storm that plagued the Western New York region in mid-November 2014 wreaked havoc across counties and businesses for nearly an entire week.

And when it was over, we were pleased to receive an interesting story from Patrick Connors, Chief Mechanical Officer of Buffalo Southern Railroad about the PowerHouse DWS-120 unit installed on one of their locomotives:

“As you are probably aware, Buffalo was pounded with as much at seven feet of snow over a four-day period in November. Our leased-out locomotive #93 sat just inside of that white wall of snow and no one was able to reach it for the duration of the storm,” he stated. “The customer that leases it transloads aggregates from lake to rail there and was awaiting their final shipment of the year.” Patrick continued.
“I stopped to check the locomotive on Monday afternoon just before the snow started. Once the snow started, it (the locomotive) disappeared,” he said. “The customer had a crew in on Tuesday morning to begin clearing snow, which became a lost cause. Even their massive bucket loaders were no match. In fact, they ended up being stuck in the area for two days. One snow blower crew passed the locomotive on Thursday and he commented that there was no snow at all on the top of #93!” He went on to say.

Power Drives is appreciative of the valuable feedback Patrick provided on the test of the PowerHouse unit against the elements. “Finally by Friday afternoon,” he said “I received a call from the customer stating that #93 still had fuel and the heater was running. When I made it down there over that weekend amongst the mountains of snow, there was no snow around the locomotive! The PowerHouse operated flawlessly throughout the whole storm. We are very happy with the PowerHouse unit.”

Been going here for about 4 years… staff is always super knowledgable, friendly, attentive (Corey! and Stan!)… they recognize me and I appreciate it. Power Drives, Inc. (PDI) is a Buffalo, N.Y.-based manufacturer and OEM supplier of locomotive idle reduction technology, fuel filtration systems, and water separation technology for locomotive compressed air systems.

PDI’s PowerHouse™ Idle Reduction Technology is available in two models: The APU and the 120. The APU (Auxiliary Power Unit) incorporates a Tier 4-compliant, 9.5 hp Kubota® engine that drives an alternator, providing power to the pumps and trickle charging the locomotive battery bank. It consumes, on average, 0.38 GPH (gallons per hour) of fuel once at temperature.

The 120 operates from a 120/240 VAC external power source. The 120 consumes, on average, 0.35 GPH of fuel once at temperature. Jonathan McCullough, Manager of Mechanical at TNW Corporation, says, “120 volts is a big advantage compared to [PDI’s] competitors. The electrical requirements are lower, allowing for more optimal locations to utilize the PowerHouse™ 120.”

Both compact units feature the PowerHouse™ Heat Exchanger, rated at 136,000 BTUs/hour (40kW). The heat exchanger provides rapid coolant heating, maintaining an engine coolant temperature of 100° F
“even in the coldest of temperatures.”

McCullough says, “Idling is extremely costly in the winter months. For EMD locomotives in particular, oil consumption through excessive idling is consequently another large expense to factor. The PowerHouse™ has greatly reduced our fuel and oil consumption while also reducing maintenance costs from lower operating hours. The TXR Railway is located right in town, so eliminating unnecessary idling helps reduce noise pollution for the local residence.

The PowerHouse™ also offers remote monitoring capabilities, which allows users to monitor operating parameters real-time remotely on smart devices or computers. McCullough also says, “The initial benefit is fuel savings. The oil savings, maintenance savings and remote monitoring are additional bonuses…The remote monitoring gives real-time alerts, keeping track of fuel savings, engine temperatures and much more. This gives piece of mind knowing our locomotives are being monitored around the clock. It’s basically set ‘em and forget ‘em. PDI is the only company we’ve found that offers this, and it’s one of the main reasons we decided on the PowerHouse™.”

The PDI water separation technology protects fleets against frozen compressed air lines by eliminating water from the lines.
